Shashi Tharoor, aiming for a fourth consecutive win from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, has disclosed assets totaling over Rs 55 crore in his nomination papers. As the incumbent Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, he also reported a total income exceeding Rs 4.32 crore for the financial year 2022-2023.
In the affidavit submitted with his nomination papers, Tharoor detailed his assets and liabilities. He stated movable assets of over Rs 49 crore, encompassing deposits in 19 bank accounts and investments in various bonds, debentures, and mutual funds. Additionally, his movable assets include 534 grams of gold valued at Rs 32 lakh and Rs 36,000 in cash.
His immovable assets are valued at over Rs 6.75 crore, consisting of an inherited one-fourth share in a 2.51-acre agricultural land in Palakkad, a self-acquired 10.47-acre land in Thiruvananthapuram, and his residence in the state capital valued at approximately Rs 52 lakh.
Tharoor’s affidavit also revealed ownership of two cars, a Maruti Ciaz and a Maruti XL6. Despite his considerable wealth and educational achievements—including a PhD in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University, USA) and an honorary Doctor of Letters in International Affairs from the University of Puget Sound, USA—he is embroiled in legal matters.
He is named as an accused in nine cases across the country, primarily for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups. Additionally, he faces four court cases, including two for defamation (one each in Kerala and Delhi) and one in Kolkata for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups. In 2014, Tharoor declared assets exceeding Rs 23 crore, which increased to over Rs 35 crore in 2019.
