An individual hailing from Assam named Faizan Ahmed, who was a student at IIT Kharagpur, was discovered deceased in a dormitory room approximately two years prior. A forensic specialist appointed by the court suggested that Ahmed may have sustained blows from a blunt object and possibly gunshot wounds.

The scrutiny of footage depicting Ahmed’s remains revealed evidence of a wound beneath the ear, as stated by forensic expert Dr. A K Gupta. Dr. Gupta conveyed his findings to both the Calcutta High Court and the special investigative team (SIT) assigned to investigate the student’s demise in 2022.

“Observations from the footage of the student’s remains indicate a substantial amount of blood and the presence of a wound below the ear near the mandible, suggesting possible weapon usage. The autopsy report indicated the discovery of the decomposed body two days after death,” conveyed Gupta to PTI.

“I am currently seeking additional footage to arrive at a conclusive determination. However, the indications present on his body suggest a scenario beyond a mere natural death. It is conceivable that he endured physical assault and firearm injuries. I am endeavoring to address any lingering uncertainties,” he articulated. Gupta affirmed that he had relayed his discoveries to both the SIT and the Calcutta High Court. “In my capacity as the court-appointed forensic expert, I shall proffer my insights during forthcoming hearings, as this process remains ongoing,” he affirmed.

The court had instructed the SIT to provide pertinent video segments and static images as requested by Dr. Gupta. Earlier, the forensic specialist had apprised the court that a thorough examination of videos and photographs depicting the uppermost region of the right side of the deceased’s neck was necessary to establish a sequence of events.

The court had instructed the forensic expert to furnish his definitive opinion on the cause of death during the subsequent hearing. According to Aniruddha Mitra, legal counsel for petitioner Salim Ahmed, the matter is anticipated to be adjudicated before the court in the ensuing week. Expressing surprise, the Calcutta High Court, which had sanctioned the exhumation and subsequent post-mortem examination of the IIT student’s remains, remarked on the oversight of injury marks on the posterior aspect of his cranium during the initial autopsy.

The father of the third-year student had petitioned the high court, seeking the establishment of a specialized investigative unit to delve into the circumstances surrounding his son’s demise following the discovery of his body in his dormitory room on October 14, 2022. A spokesperson for IIT Kharagpur stated, “We are committed to uncovering the truth. Our cooperation with the investigative authorities has been steadfast, adhering to the directives of the court.”
