Unforeseen torrential downpours and powerful gusts swept through various regions of Telangana on Sunday, resulting in widespread chaos and destruction as cyclone Remal made its presence felt in the Bay of Bengal. The afternoon tempests uprooted trees and utility poles, causing structural damage and tragic accidents that claimed the lives of 13 individuals.
The abrupt atmospheric disturbances have thrown the state into disarray, leaving its inhabitants in distress. Among the casualties, seven perished in various incidents within the confines of Nagarkurnool district alone. Tragic circumstances unfolded as a shed collapsed, claiming the lives of a father and his daughter, while others succumbed to lightning strikes and vehicular mishaps.
Car Crushed by Falling Tree: An automobile and an auto-rickshaw were crushed beneath a fallen tree along Canara Bank Road in the vicinity of the Ganesh Temple in Vanasthalipuram, Hyderabad. Traffic disruptions ensued across numerous districts, accompanied by prolonged power outages and structural tremors. Nagarkurnool district bore the brunt of heavy rainfall, while windstorms swept through Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri districts. Precipitation inundated Ghanpur, Ibrahimpet, and Gurrampodu mandal centers in Nalgonda district.
In Hyderabad, vigorous winds wreaked havoc on thoroughfares, residences, and vehicles alike. Multifarious signboards and multi-storey structures bore the brunt of the onslaught. Furthermore, torrential rain compounded the woes, exacerbating the plight of affected denizens residing in locales such as Hayathnagar, Vanasthalipuram, LB Nagar, and Malkajgiri, among others. The ensuing traffic disruptions compounded the challenges faced by residents.
Nagarkurnool District Tragedy: An under-construction tin-roofed structure collapsed amidst agricultural fields on the outskirts of Tadooru in Nagarkurnool district, near Indrakal Road. Farmer Mallesh (38), his daughter Anusha (12), along with laborers Chennamma and Ramudu, met their untimely demise. Mallesh’s wife, Parvathamma, their son Raju, and two others sustained grievous injuries and were promptly rushed to a medical facility.
Another mishap unfolded near Mantati Gate in Nagarkurnool, where a stone dislodged from a tin shed fatally struck Venugopal (38) at the wheel of his vehicle. Hailing from Neelapalli, Bashirabad mandal, Vikarabad district, Venugopal was en route from Srisailam when tragedy struck. Additionally, Laxman (12) from Telkapally and Kummari Venkataiah (54) from Marepalli, Timmajipeta mandal, lost their lives in separate lightning strikes.
Four Fatalities in Hyderabad: Strong gusts toppled a large tree onto Nagireddy and Dhanunjay as they traversed from Keesara to Shamirpet on a two-wheeler. Residents of Bommalaramaram village in Yadadri district, Nagireddy Rami Reddy, aged 56, perished instantly, while Dhanunjay, aged 44, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a nearby medical facility.
In Sai Nagar, Hafeezpet, a tin shed collapsed on the third story of a dwelling, resulting in fatal injuries to three-year-old Samad and Rashid, aged 45. Tragedy struck as they traversed the vicinity, with Samad succumbing to his injuries on the spot, and Rashid later passing away in the hospital.
Poultry Farm Tragedy: Gang Gaurishankar (30) from Ghanpur village, Medak district, and his sister-in-law Bhagamma (50) from Chandrayangutta, Hyderabad, visited relatives in Ksheerasagar, Siddipet district, on Saturday. The following day, seeking refuge near the walls of Irukula Ramulu’s poultry farm during a thunderstorm proved fatal, as the structure collapsed amidst strong winds, claiming the lives of Gaurishankar and Bhagamma.
Record High Temperatures: Conversely, temperatures soared to a staggering 46.5 degrees Celsius in certain regions of the state on Sunday. Jain in Dharmapuri mandal of Jagityala district recorded 46.5 degrees Celsius, while Buddepalli mandal and Bellampalli district registered temperatures of 46.1 and 45.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Additionally, Peddapalli district recorded temperatures of 45.8 degrees Celsius, with Korutla mandal and Dharmapuri mandal registering 45.6 degrees Celsius, and Bhimpur mandal recording 45.2 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department forecasts dry weather in the state for Monday and Tuesday.
