In Lucknow, a proclamation from the Bharatiya Janata Party has instituted a novel dress regulation for law enforcement officers stationed at the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Going forward, they will don traditional garb rather than the conventional khaki attire. This decree was issued by Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Aggarwal.

The directive dictated that police personnel on duty within the temple grounds adopt the garb of priests, complete with dhoti-kurta ensembles and Rudraksha necklaces. This decision has ignited a fervent debate.

Akhilesh Yadav, the former chief minister and head of the Samajwadi Party, vehemently opposed the mandate. He questioned, “Which police guideline endorses the idea of law enforcers dressing akin to priests? Those responsible for this decision should face immediate suspension. How can the government address the risks of potential deception and exploitation that could arise from this move?”

Criticism from netizens on social media platforms has also highlighted discontent with the Yogi administration.

Commissioner Mohit Agarwal stood by the decision, noting, “Temple responsibilities differ markedly from those elsewhere. The congregation at such sites does not typically threaten public order. However, the manner in which police facilitate access for worshippers can sometimes cause unease. By resembling priests, law enforcement can foster a more positive perception among the devotees. This is the rationale for the revised dress code.”
