A 30-year-old life sentence inmate housed at Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail in Meerut experienced a suspicious demise on Saturday, raising significant concerns.

The deceased’s relatives have voiced their accusations, suggesting foul play in a calculated fashion within the prison. A thorough internal investigation is underway, with four police personnel immediately relieved of their duties as part of the inquiry.

Jailer Shashikant Mishra noted that Rohit, aged 30, and residing in Gagol village, was detained on allegations of an acid assault. In the morning hours, he was found inert in his cell, subsequently rushed to the facility’s medical center and later transported to the district hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Upon receiving news of Rohit’s passing, his family asserted that his death was orchestrated deliberately within the confines of the jail. His sibling, Vineet, mentioned Rohit had been sentenced to life imprisonment but had initially secured bail from the High Court, only for it to be later rescinded, leading to his return to incarceration on April 9. Since then, Rohit’s mental state had deteriorated.

Vineet further recounted that during a visit with Rohit, his brother conveyed fears for his life due to alleged threats. Additionally, Rohit expressed discomfort with the placement of a mentally unstable inmate in his cell.

The jailer confirmed that a special team had been formed to delve into the matter, with clarity expected only after the postmortem findings are available.

Rohit was apprehended in 2018 for his role in an acid attack on a female educator, resulting in her suffering 70% burns. The trial culminated in a life sentence, though he was later granted bail by the Allahabad High Court. The victim contested the high court’s decision, leading to the revocation of Rohit’s bail and his subsequent return to Meerut jail on April 9.
