Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh): In an inventive response to the persistent heat waves, the traffic police commissioner has introduced innovative “AC helmets” for officers managing traffic.
Shiva Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), revealed that these helmets are currently being deployed among Kanpur Traffic Police on a provisional basis. Should the pilot prove fruitful, a statewide implementation would follow.
The traffic authorities have acquired seven helmets for this test phase from a Hyderabad-based firm. Each helmet incurs an expense ranging between Rs 12,000 and Rs 16,000.
Once charged, the internal battery can power the device for eight hours. Singh discussed the helmet’s benefits in a detailed interview with ETV Bharat.
“Currently, helmets are being utilized by traffic personnel stationed at key junctions in Kanpur as part of the trial. After positive assessments, helmets will be distributed among all traffic officers at major junctions. The helmet functions with a battery pack worn at the waist, requiring a recharge every eight hours. It features advanced technology,” Singh articulated.
The helmet also integrates a hard plastic visor to shield the officers’ eyes from intense sunlight, she noted.
The DCP stated that a total of 552 traffic police personnel in Kanpur will have access to these specialized helmets. This comprises six Traffic Inspectors, 92 Traffic Sub-Inspectors, 157 Head Constables, and 297 Constables, she elaborated.
TI Pravesh Kumar recounted his experience, expressing how wearing the helmet provided a refreshing sensation. “The harsh solar glare is effectively blocked, resulting in a pleasing comfort,” he remarked.
