Turmoil ensued at a public gathering organized by Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, in Azamgarh on Tuesday, as adherents hurled projectiles and vandalized seats in their attempt to approach the platform. Consequently, law enforcement had to resort to wielding batons to quell the unrest.
The assembly took place at the Kharewa junction in the Saraymeer area of the Lalganj parliamentary constituency in Azamgarh. Upon Yadav’s arrival, pandemonium erupted as party affiliates endeavored to reach him. Amidst the chaos, certain individuals commenced hurling stones and causing damage to seating arrangements. Despite Yadav’s earnest appeals for tranquility from the podium, his entreaties fell on deaf ears.
Law enforcement personnel found themselves struggling to manage the throng, ultimately dispersing the troublemakers through forceful means. Eventually, the public gathering was able to commence, with Yadav delivering his address to those assembled.
This marked Yadav’s inaugural public gathering in the district ahead of the sixth phase of voting scheduled for May 25 in Azamgarh. The incident has prompted scrutiny regarding the conduct of SP operatives.
According to law enforcement authorities, supporters engaged in altercations as they vied for proximity to the dais, resulting in disturbances at the venue.
A comparable tumult, resembling a stampede, unfolded at a rally within the Phulpur parliamentary constituency in the district of Prayagraj on Sunday. SP adherents breached barricades to approach the platform. With tensions escalating, both Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party and Yadav were compelled to vacate the premises without delivering their speeches.
