In Chennai, the provincial administration notified the Madras High Court on Tuesday that the Sri Lankan High Commission has accorded passports to three individuals previously convicted in the case concerning the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The individuals in question are Murugan, Jayakumar, and Robert Pius. It was stipulated that following approval from the Union government, these three individuals will be repatriated to Sri Lanka.
A division bench, presided over by Justice R Suresh Kumar and K Kumaresh Babu, deliberated on the matter. Sriharan, also known as Murugan, had petitioned the court requesting the provincial government to issue him a photographic identification card, necessary for visa application to visit the United Kingdom, where his daughter resides.
The Additional Public Prosecutor, R Muniyappa Raj, apprised the bench that the Sri Lankan High Commission has issued passports to the individuals who have been released from incarceration. Furthermore, it was stated that the provincial authorities have communicated with the Union government to seek approval for their repatriation.
The bench opined that since Murugan has been granted a passport, the necessity for an identification card for his journey to the UK is obviated. Consequently, the plea was dismissed by the court.
Following his release from prison, Murugan has been placed under restricted residence in a specialized detention facility in Trichy. His daughter, a citizen of the UK, has made arrangements for him to reside with her. In pursuit of obtaining a visa, Murugan had initiated the process for obtaining an identification card and had taken legal recourse in this matter.
