In the early hours of Sunday morning in Burnsville, Minnesota, a tragic incident unfolded, leaving two police officers and a firefighter fatally shot, and another officer injured. The distressing event commenced around 1:50 am when Burnsville police responded to a domestic incident. According to city officials, a man armed himself, barricading inside the home with family members.
The situation escalated upon the arrival of responders, resulting in gunfire. Notably located approximately 15 miles south of Minneapolis, Burnsville witnessed the unfortunate loss of officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27, along with firefighter and paramedic Adam Finseth, aged 40. Sergeant Adam Medlicott, another officer, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering in the hospital.
The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was also killed during the confrontation, as reported by CNN citing the official news release. Thankfully, other family members managed to exit the home safely, including seven children aged 2 to 15.
Superintendent Drew Evans of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension provided details during a news conference, revealing that the 911 call originated from within the home. The unidentified man, armed with multiple guns and ample ammunition, engaged in gunfire with the police from various positions within the residence.
A significant quantity of firearms was recovered from the scene, and the authorities plan to review body camera footage for further insights. Autopsies are scheduled for Monday, and while there is no ongoing threat in the area, residents are urged to steer clear during the investigation.
Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences during a news conference, stating, “Minnesota mourns with you.” He extended his support to the victims’ families online, emphasizing the need to appreciate the bravery and sacrifices made by police officers and first responders daily. Governor Walz announced that flags across Minnesota would fly at half-staff on Monday, with the state Department of Public Safety coordinating an investigation with local law enforcement.
