In the midst of emerging reports surrounding the restriction of Facebook in Kabul, the ‘Committee to Safeguard Reporters’ headquartered in the United States has urged the ruling government of the Taliban to reconsider this decree, as per Khaama Press.
Responding to the emerging news of Facebook’s prohibition in Afghanistan, the Committee to Safeguard Reporters (CSR) disseminated communiqués articulating their apprehensions and urging the de facto regime to retract their stance.
As per the agency’s assertions, the ban on Facebook in Afghanistan erects impediments to the unrestricted flow of information. The response from the Committee to Safeguard Reporters follows the earlier pronouncement conveyed to TOLONews by Najibullah Haqqani, the interim minister for Telecommunications and Information Technology, regarding the ministry’s directive to constrain or obstruct Facebook usage in Afghanistan, as reported by Khaama Press.
Haqqani defended the restriction, citing its intention to dissuade the younger populace from squandering their time and resources, and to curb the dissemination of ‘unethical’ ideologies. Despite Facebook’s prevailing popularity among Afghan denizens in comparison to other social platforms, the extent of its current usage remains nebulous.
Previously, the gaming platform PUBG, alongside the video-sharing social platform TikTok, had been subjected to bans by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology under the Taliban’s administration.
