In the realm of Nashville, a military personnel, Sgt. Korbein Schultz, finds himself entangled in the intricate web of accusations pertaining to the clandestine trade of sensitive information linked to the capabilities of the U.S. armed forces. Officials from the Department of Justice unveiled this disconcerting revelation on Thursday.
Sgt. Schultz, not only an Army soldier but also an astute intelligence analyst, faces a six-count indictment. The charges against him span a spectrum, including the alleged conspiracy to acquire and divulge military defense information, coupled with the bribery of a public official. The arrest of the 24-year-old transpired at Fort Campbell, a strategic location that straddles the Tennessee-Kentucky border, promptly following the release of the indictment.
U.S. Attorney Henry C. Leventis for the Middle District of Tennessee emphasized the gravity of the situation during a press briefing. “The men and women of the United States Armed Forces dedicate their lives to maintain our national security. Our laws protecting national defense information are critical to that mission, and they must be enforced. Illegal dissemination of national defense information puts our country, our fellow citizens, members of our military and our allies at risk.”
Per the indictment’s narrative, Schultz, wielding a top-secret security clearance, purportedly colluded with an individual cryptically identified as “Conspirator A.” Their alleged machinations involved the disclosure of diverse documents, photographs, and other materials pertinent to national defense, dating back to June 2022. Schultz’s recruitment into this clandestine alliance was not solely due to his security clearance; he was also chosen for his role in gathering sensitive U.S. military intelligence.
The disclosed information spanned details related to the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, hypersonic equipment, future developments of U.S. military forces, and insights into military drills and operations in significant countries, including China.
According to the indictment, Schultz’s initial involvement revolved around providing documents elucidating lessons gleaned from Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, with a focus on their applicability to U.S. support for Taiwan in the event of an attack. The remuneration for this initial information amounted to $200, prompting Conspirator A to propose a “long-term partnership.”
Conspirator A, purportedly a foreign national residing in Hong Kong, later enticed Schultz with the prospect of higher earnings if he divulged “internal only” materials instead of unclassified documents. The financial transactions revealed that Schultz received at least 14 payments totaling $42,000.
Leventis elucidated further, stating, “The defendant and his co-conspirator also discussed recruiting another member of the U.S. military to join their conspiracy and to provide additional national defense information in order to conceal their illegal conduct.”
In a statement, Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Ruth Castro revealed that Schultz enlisted in the Army in November 2018, hailing from Wills Point, Texas. His military assignments included a stint at Fort Cavazos, Texas, and a deployment to Eastern Europe, as disclosed by Lt. Col. Tony Hoefler, a Fort Campbell spokesperson.
This case adds to a series of federal prosecutions involving current or former military members accused of illicitly disclosing sensitive government secrets. A notable instance occurred in April 2023, when Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira faced charges of leaking highly classified military documents about Russia’s war in Ukraine on Discord, a popular social media platform.
In August of the same year, two U.S. Navy sailors faced charges for divulging sensitive military information to China, encompassing details on wartime exercises, naval operations, and critical technical material. More recently, the Justice Department brought charges against a civilian Air Force employee and a retired Army lieutenant colonel for allegedly sharing classified information about the war in Ukraine on a foreign dating site.
