In the latest escalation of conflict, Russia initiated its third substantial missile onslaught against Ukraine within a span of four days, singling out the capital city of Kyiv for the second time. The Polish military reported that one of the missiles, discharged towards western Ukraine, briefly trespassed into Polish airspace on Sunday.
Serhiy Popko, the chief of Kyiv’s military administration, disclosed that Russia deployed cruise missiles via Tu-95MS strategic bombers. The air defense in Kyiv was put on high alert for over two hours as the missiles penetrated the city from the northern direction in clusters. Popko specified that the strikes originated from the Engels precinct in the Saratov province of Russia.
Initial assessments indicate no casualties or infrastructure damage in the capital. The operational command of Poland, a NATO constituent, issued a communiqué affirming an airspace breach at 4:23 a.m. (0323GMT) by a Russian-launched cruise missile aimed at western Ukrainian settlements.
The projectile entered near the Polish locality of Oserdw and lingered for a duration of 39 seconds, as per the statement. It further noted continuous monitoring of the missile via military radar systems throughout its incursion, with requisite measures promptly enacted to safeguard Polish airspace.
