In New Delhi, the White House affirmed that the United States, being a nation of migrants, stood by President Joe Biden’s assertion labeling two of its QUAD partners, India and Japan, along with Russia and China, as “xenophobic” states. The White House noted the distinction that none of these countries, in contrast to the US, embrace migrants.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, addressing queries regarding President Biden’s statements during an electoral fundraiser on May 2, Thursday, elucidated that the President aimed for a broader perspective.
“The President’s intent was broader. Our allies and partners understand the depth of respect this president holds for them,” Jean-Pierre stated during her routine press briefing on Thursday.
“As observed, with Japan, their recent state visit exemplifies the significance of the U.S.-Japan bond. It’s a profound, enduring partnership,” she appended.
“Biden’s scope was wider, emphasizing the essence of our nation and the significance of its immigrant fabric in fortifying our nation. That’s the crux of his message,” she emphasized.
“This pertains to our alliance with our counterparts, which remains steadfast. Our bond with India and Japan is robust. The President, over the past three years, has devoted considerable attention to these diplomatic ties,” Ms. Jean-Pierre reiterated.
“He spoke about our national identity, underscoring the value of being a land of immigrants, especially in light of the recent surge in anti-immigrant sentiments witnessed in recent years,” the White House Press Secretary staunchly defended President Biden.
“The President will consistently address issues pertinent to the American populace. We are, fundamentally, a nation of immigrants. This is pivotal. Given the onslaught of such sentiments, the President will not waver in his stance,” Jean-Pierre affirmed.
“It is imperative to acknowledge our immigrant heritage. I’m elucidating the essence of his remarks and his focal point: our immigrant heritage fortifies us. Clarity on this matter is crucial,” she asserted.
Addressing supporters at the Democratic Party fundraiser on Thursday, Biden emphasized, “This election centers on liberty, America, and democracy. Hence, your support is indispensable. Consider this, our economic growth owes much to you and others like you. Why? Because we welcome immigrants.”
“Contemplate this. Why is China’s economic growth stagnating? Why does Japan face hurdles? Why Russia? Why India? Their aversion to immigrants constrains them,” he articulated.
It’s noteworthy that India and Japan are part of QUAD – a strategic security dialogue alongside the US and Australia.
Furthermore, Biden hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a State Visit last year, while Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the White House in April for an official meeting. Biden faces criticism from adversaries and the Republican Party over his immigration policies, with thousands of undocumented immigrants entering the United States monthly.
Immigration dominates discussions ahead of the November 5 presidential election, where President Biden is set to contend with former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate.
